Researching people with eating disorders, Kristine Rørtveit, has learned several things about eating disorders and how they affect people. She has learned that they struggle trying to hide their disorder, and guilt. Many mothers will sit at the table with their family and have to pretend to be enjoying the meal knowing that they will soon being purging their food back up. They feel so much guilt because they feel as if they have to live this terrible second life as if they are on drugs. Kristine also found that some women get a “high” from having an eating disorder just like they would from using a drug. As a health care worker, Kristine thinks it’s necessary to find the reasoning behind the disorder in able to help them.

I moved back to Ohio from Italy after my father became a civilian in the air force. When I got back I went to a new church and met a young lady by the name Rikki. She was very welcoming and was also very pretty and well-rounded. She offered to go jogging or something with me sometime and told me she knew of a great trail that we could run. I was glad I found a good friend and I thought she was always the type to be smiling until one day I saw her at school looking terribly ill.
I asked her how she was feeling and she said fine. The next day she seemed back to normal for the most part until later that afternoon. I went to the girl’s restroom around 1 o’ clock that afternoon. I heard a gagging sound coming from the back stall. Concerned, I asked “Everything okay in there?” Next thing I know Rikki comes stumbling out. All the color from her face was gone and she looked horrific. Her eyes got huge when she saw that it was me. “Please don’t tell anybody about this!” She said panicking. “I won’t but what were you doing? You weren’t making yourself throw up were you?” I waited for a response and then she just broke down in tears.
She told me everything. She’s been anorexic for about 3 months now and nobody knew; not even me. She explained that her whole life revolved around being skinny. She exercised even at the sight of food and kept weighing herself on a daily basis. I told her that I would try to get her help and then she became furious. Her eyes closed in and she said, “You try to tell ANYBODY and I will hurt you.” Out of shock, I walked out of the bathroom. Still to this day Rikki lives with this disease. I wish there was a way to help her without stepping on her toes.

    ...
Anorexia Nervosa is defined as an eating disorder that causes self-starvation due to self-image distortion. It can also cause women to gain Amenorrhea, which is simply absence of a menstrual period ( Advameg Incorporation). It is found commonly in teenage girls although it can always affect teenage boys as well ( Advameg Incorporation). Anorexia is typically caused by a primary metal disorder such as depression. It can easily cause someone to see them self as an over -weight person when they may not be. People with this disorder often purge. Purging is the way a person gets things out of their stomach to avoid gaining weight (National Eating Disorders Association, 2005). Usually anorexic people use the method of making their selves vomit. They are also known to exercise excessively.
Bulimia Nervosa is defined as an eating disorder that a person will starve their self for a period of time then eat a large amount of food at one time (New, 2007). Often this disease gets mixed up with anorexia because they are so alike. Bulimia is dangerous in such a way because binge eating can kill you instantly. This disease is also found to distort one’s vision of their self. This is why it has close ties to mental issues, such as Anorexia does.

Even though the realities of these disorders seem extremely tragic, there are several ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent the disorder. To diagnose, the people around the person must be honest and find them help if they will not find it on their own. Some clinics use 85% of normal body weight to diagnose a person with Anorexia although there is not a “normal” to “low” body weight (Academy For Eating Disorders, 2006). The treatment usually involves being put into rehab centers to slowly rehabilitate the ill by checking the history of the patient, their current condition, and weight and size measurements (Academy For Eating Disorders, 2006). Prevention is usually done by organizations such as NEDA that educate the community so that it may hopefully never become an issue (National Eating Disorders Association, 2005).
The harsh realities of these disorders can be hard to swallow. The number of teenagers involved in these actions is surprising; they can be resolved with prevention and treatment. It is very important that people are observant and honest so that teenage victims of this disorder can get help.

Bone Marrow” {Control_1_small.jpg} Normal knee {Anorexic_1_small.jpg} Anorexic knee
Based on MRI images of twenty anorexic girls’ knees, the Children’s Hospital Boston came to the conclusion that anorexic people have high levels of fat in their bone marrow. The MRI images were studied by radiologist that had no previous knowledge of the girl’s condition. After comparing the twenty anorexic girl’s bones to twenty healthy girl’s knees they realized the fat bone or the yellow marrow was found in the femur and tibia or the leg bones. It is believed that hormonal change may be linked to the increased amount of yellow marrow in one’s bones. Malnutrition is known to affect the hormones so it would be valid to say that anorexic people experience hormonal change, hence yellow marrow in the bone.
“10 To 15 Percent of Women May Be Affected By Disordered Eating”
According to the Journal of Eating Disorders 10 to 15 percent of women are affected by an eating disorder. Lise Gauvin says that women are encouraged to lose weight so some of them will do anything to do so. The main point of the article is that more women do take part in eating disorder actions but may not be anorexic. However it is still a great problem because just one act of an eating disorder can be fatal. It was studied that 28% of women took part in unhealthy exercising twice a month. This is considered a sign of anorexia but this does not mean the women is anorexic.
