I moved back to Ohio from Italy after my father became a civilian in the air force. When I got back I went to a new church and met a young lady by the name Rikki. She was very welcoming and was also very pretty and well-rounded. She offered to go jogging or something with me sometime and told me she knew of a great trail that we could run. I was glad I found a good friend and I thought she was always the type to be smiling until one day I saw her at school looking terribly ill.
I asked her how she was feeling and she said fine. The next day she seemed back to normal for the most part until later that afternoon. I went to the girl’s restroom around 1 o’ clock that afternoon. I heard a gagging sound coming from the back stall. Concerned, I asked “Everything okay in there?” Next thing I know Rikki comes stumbling out. All the color from her face was gone and she looked horrific. Her eyes got huge when she saw that it was me. “Please don’t tell anybody about this!” She said panicking. “I won’t but what were you doing? You weren’t making yourself throw up were you?” I waited for a response and then she just broke down in tears.
She told me everything. She’s been anorexic for about 3 months now and nobody knew; not even me. She explained that her whole life revolved around being skinny. She exercised even at the sight of food and kept weighing herself on a daily basis. I told her that I would try to get her help and then she became furious. Her eyes closed in and she said, “You try to tell ANYBODY and I will hurt you.” Out of shock, I walked out of the bathroom. Still to this day Rikki lives with this disease. I wish there was a way to help her without stepping on her toes.
